New Hip-Hop from Australia
This year has been huge for the Australian/ New Zealand Hip-Hop scene as three huge albums were released and made available on spotify. The History of the Australian and New Zealand Hip-Hop scene and how it has grown rapidly over the last 5 - 10 years is a topic in itself that will be covered in a later blog, however, to get a taste of what Australian Hip-Hop has to offer, a listen to these Albums would be perfect.
'Off The Grid' - Bliss n Eso
Bliss N Eso have always placed a great emphasis on their artwork in telling the story of their Album. Off The Grid is no different, the Album covers a range of dark topics related to the the rapper Eso (Max Mackinnon) as he deals with his problems with alchohol. The story covers the journey of Eso on the road to sobriety. The Album also covers and pays tribute to an actor that was killed on set for a video clip that was being filmed.
'Speeding' - Allday
Speeding was released on the 21st of April, Allday (Tom Gaynor) teamed for with producer Japanese Wallpaper to create the single, and my personal favourite from the Album, 'In Motion', which is the third track in the album. Tom Gaynor describes the album as being “a deliberately vague chronicle of a difficult time in my life, but at this moment I can say I like it a lot, and I’m hopeful people will enjoy it too. May I never again take 3 years to release an album.”
'Hood Country Club' - David Dallas
David Dallas is one of NZ's biggest Hip-Hop innovators, with no new Album being a copy in style from the last, and 'Hood Country Club' is no different. David Dallas exclaims that “I put it all into this one. I don’t really feel like being build ups – I’ll just say this record took time because it needed to, I’m proud of it, and I’ll be happy when everyone gets to hear it.”
