Top #15 Hip-Hop and RnB Albums of 2017 Pt. II

2017 Album Countdown Pt. I (#10-#6)

In this post, we’ll pick up right we left off with our Top 15 countdown for Hip-Hop/RnB so far for the year! Also how did you feel about our #15-#11? Did we miss anything that should’ve been up there? Leave us a comment on this post.

#10 Sampha - Process

Starting off this next 5 albums, comes Sampha’s Process at number 10. With only 10 songs, this sweet little debut studio album from the British artist was released at the start of February, and truly captured his style and musical gift. A perfect blend of electronic meets RnB in this masterpiece, heard strongly in songs like Plastic 100C and Reverse Faults (well worth a listen if you like electronic beats). The first single he dropped from the album, (No One Knows Me) Lke the Piano is such a sweet piano ballad, with a catchy and heartfelt melody that allows us to journey into Sampha’s personal life.

There’s no doubt here that Process deserves spot #10 on our chart, and we are so excited to see what else Sampha brings us in the future.

#9 THEY - Nü Religion: Hyena

Number 9 has to go to another debut album, Nü Religion: Hyena by THEY. This previously unheard of duo dropped a real juicy piece into 2017 hip-hop with this record which captures their original and experimental rap flow. Notable songs on the album include Back It Up, Africa and the best “I Don’t Wanna Wait – Paula Cole” cover we’ve heard thus far in Dante’s Creek. Silence is a very RnB style hit on the album, and goes to show that THEY (pun intended) truly tried to capture all aspects of Hip-Hop.

The LA duo have definitely entered the game as a serious threat to new-age rappers and RnB artists like-wise, and we can’t wait to hear more from them! #Nüreligion

#8 Kehlani - SweetSexySavage (Deluxe)

The RnB artist Kehlani earns spot #8 on our list with her late January addition SweetSexySavage (Deluxe). Being released about a month later than intended, Kehlani earned back any respect lost from her fans from the delayed release of this amazing record. This RnB artist from Oakland is becoming a big name with female RnB singers, alongside artists like Ariana Grande and Rihanna. The album shows the listener the Sweet side of her in songs like Everything Is Yours and Hold Me By The Heart, the Sexy with Do U Dirty and Not Used To It, and the Savage side of her personality with CRZY and Personal
Overall this 18 piece album is what fans needed from the Cali artist and rightfully earns her spot at number 8.

#7 Run The Jewels - RTJ3 (Run The Jewels 3)

At number 7, we’ve got RTJ3 (Run The Jewels 3) by Run The Jewels, even though it was digitally released 6 days before the start of 2017, it was physically released January 13th. Despite the rap duos album names being particularly uncreative (Run The Jewels 1, 2 & 3), their music is strictly the opposite. The pair is made up of rapper Killer Mike and rapper/producer El-P, the perfect blend of both voices makes their music original and diverse. RTJ 3 shows off their gritty Boston bars, complete with thunderous bass and ruthless disses. It’s hard for us to pick our favourite songs from the album, but included would be Legend Has It, Hey Kids (Bumaye) [feat. Danny Brown), 2100 (feat. BOOTS) (a banger with a wet bass-line that you just HAVE to nod your head to) and Don’t Get Captured. Run The Jewels really satisfied their fans and new listeners alike with this record.

#6 Big Sean - I Decided

And the last spot for this post is number 6, which goes to Big Sean for his early February album I Decided. The Santa Monica rap artist enters his 10th year of being active with arguably one of his best albums, and well deserving of spot #6. I Decided perfectly blends into one amazing project through the song transitions, especially the dope Intro to the album, followed by Light (feat. Jeremih). Big sean really confronts his reality and past with this record, with Voices in My Head/Stick to the Plan and Bigger Than Me show him openly baring scars and lessons learned. Complete with a juicy guest line-up, featuring Migos, Jeremih, Starrah, and one of Eminem’s most lethal guest spots in No Favors. Sean’s venom and verbal jiu-jitsu skills are overpowering in this album, saying “I feel like I sent the prayers up and God blessed back/Whoa.”, and definitely blessing him with the 6th spot in our top album countdown.

That concludes part II of our 2017 countdown, were spots 10-6 what you thought they would be? Stick around till Thursday to see our top 5 for 2017, what do you think is number 1? Let us know below!
