Top #15 Hip-Hop and RnB Albums of 2017 Pt. I

2017 Album Countdown Pt. I (#15-#11)

2017 has been an amazing year for Hip-Hop and RnB in the first quarter of the year (Jan-Apr), with definitely more to come this year (we’ve heard word of another Kendrick album, and new music from Anderson Paak., A$AP Mob, Rocky and D.R.A.M). Over the next 3 posts, we’re going to cover our top 15 albums so far this year, starting with #15-#11 right now!

#15 Mike WiLL Made-It- Random 2

At number 15, we have Ransom 2 by Mike WiLL Made-It. Featuring artists like Rae Sremmurd, Big Sean, Lil Wayne, YG, and Kendrick Lamar, it is a big album this year, but just didn’t make it far up the ladder for us. The whole album kind of blends into one, with not much contrast between songs (which is never a good thing). The songs Gucci on My (feat. 21 Savage, YG & Migos) and Perfect Pint (feat. Kendrick Lamar, Gucci Mane & Rae Sremmurd) are notables on the album, with the vast array of big names in hip-hop allowing this album to just scrape through into our top 15.

#14 PnB Rock - GTTM: Goin Thru the Motions

Coming in at 14th place is PnB Rock’s GTTM: Goin Thru the Motions. The album is a great mix of trap, hip-hop and RnB, with PnB Rock making a real hit out of the song Selfish, predominately singing throughout the song which gives the album some divergence in tracks. PnB Rock is very new to the rap industry, entering in 2015 with his album RNB 3, which didn’t really do him justice. However, this album allowed everyone to recognise his skills in both song-writing and bars, with bangers such as Attention (feat. Wiz Khalifa) and Range Rover, which make you want to blast them driving down the boulevard.

#13 Stormzy - Gang Signs & Prayer

13th place has to go to the black-beast of the UK, Stormzy. His late February album Gang Signs & Prayer is one of his best records yet, with the album cover showing Stormzy as Jesus in the last supper, suggesting that he is here to save the rap-game. He sets the pace for the album with the first track First Things First, saying

“All right first things first,
I been putting in the work,
I’m a rebel with a cause….
Someone tell ‘em that I’m back,
I don’t never ever slack,
Imma plan to go to war.”

This 16-track album is a masterpiece in UK rap, with the man even delving into a gospel style of music, with Blinded By Your Grace Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 (feat. MNEK), with the two tracks sounding more like songs you would sing in a church than at a concert. This addition of such a sensitive, delicate piece detailing Fraser’s heart and gratefulness towards his God for the grace he shows him. All these aspects get Gang Signs & Prayer into our top 15.

#12 Wale - SHINE

Number 12 goes to Wale’s late album addition to 2017 SHINE, dropping it just two days before the deadline. With the perfect blend of rap, trap and melody, SHINE is by far the D.C. rappers best work. The vibrance on the cover art depicts the vibe heard throughout the album, with every song deserving its place. In Running Back (feat. Lil Wayne), Wale drops a dope trap-like piece that sets the standards high for the album, and we aren't let down. Other notable tracks include My Love (feat. Major Lazer & WizKid), Heaven on Earth (feat. Chris Brown) and Fish n Grits (feat. Travis Scott). Basically we aren't let down with this record, every song delivered.

#11 Khalid - American Teen

Finally, deserving of the highest place in this third of the ladder is Khalid's American Teen. An amazing piece of work, this first album from the RnB artist introduces his style perfectly, in our eyes placing him up the ladder with the Weeknd, Frank Ocean and similar artists. His track Location from the album peaked at 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. We hear his original style richly in songs like Saved, Coaster and Let's Go. It can be hard for new artists to express their originality and earn a place on the charts, but Khalid definitely deserves his time in the lime-light, and his number 11 spot in our 2017 album countdown.

We're pretty happy about our #15-#11 picks for 2017 so far, what do you think should've been up there? Late this week, we'll list our #10-#6 albums, so stick around (this is where it gets juicy)!
